Lab 7: Immigration in Numbers

For Lab 7, our group gathered crowdsourced information via twitter, Facebook, and in-person interviews. After browsing through some of the results, our group compiled a bar graph and pie chart to display the information we gathered

Going about gathering this information was interesting. It was a pretty personal question for most people and I had only gotten a couple good interviews. It’s a touchy subject in today’s climate. However, the information and data gathered by my partners and proved to be worth it.

With the data gathered between the crowdsourced information and the in person interviews, the data shows that majority of immigrants coming to Michigan came for the jobs in the automotive industry. Job stability was a key reason why so many immigrants chose Michigan. According to the Macomb Business website, Macomb is home to 10 automotive OEM facilities that employ more than 35,000 workers. The manufacturers also give back by investing up to $7.4 billion dollars back into Macomb County.

Other appealing factors were nature, education, schooling, and cost. Taking the total estimated populations between Macomb, Oakland, and Genesee County and implied our data gathered from the 22 people surveyed to try and put some numbers into perspective.

The manufacturing industry is a key factor to Michigan’s economy and according to The American Community Survey, manufacturing is the second largest occupation in Michigan, just following educational services and health care. Another great thing Michigan has to offer is all of the natural beauty and forestry that also seemed to draw people in.

Of course all of the surrounding bodies of water is also very attractive. Not to mention, the cost of living is also cheaper which makes it more appealing to those who have little to start out with. Between 1980 and 1999, Macomb County had a healthy population increase with an estimated 81,416 people moving in.

The information I’ve gathered with my group is fairly consistent with what’s on the community survey list. Michigan is an ideal location to start a new chapter...An economy with stable jobs to provide, ideal standard of living, and the beauty of being surrounded by water.
